Smart Money Club

Why join?

Every teenager should be financially literate. At some point in high school, we’ll all get ours 1st job. Do you know how and where to spend that money? This club will teach you the basics of saving, budgeting, investing, and debt management. It’ll allow you to make informed decisions around money so you never end up feeling insecure about your finances and build wealth early.

What do we discuss at the meetings?

Key Components and Principles

Budgeting- Creating a plan for spending and saving.

Saving Strategies: Learn how to save effectively, understand the power of compounding interest, the time value of money, Roth IRAs, etc.

Investing: different forms of investing based on your risk tolerance. Basics of stock investing. Stock picks- no matter your paycheck. Insights into the world of cryptocurrency and its potential impact on your financial future. Simple real estate investing.

Debt Management/Borrowing: Managing credit and loans responsibly to avoid high-interest traps. Debit cards, credit cards, credit scores, and building healthy credit habits.

Meeting goals

12-14 meetings in a calendar year. Everyone is involved in multiple clubs and after-school activities, so we don’t want to make this another chore, but truly a club for learning. Get together at a friend’s house or a community pool and dissect a topic! Have fun while you learn.

Structure

Short information/education session about topics like budgeting, loans, ways to save, etc., followed by real-life role plays. Eg: you have a summer job as an assistant swim coach- how are you going to spend your paycheck? Investment opportunities for beginners. You saved 50% of your paycheck- where can you invest it?

How to start this club at school?

Ready to start a Smart Money Club at your school? We've made the process simple and straightforward. Join a community of students learning to secure their financial futures.

  1. Print out the club information sheet and share it with a few friends. Link to club information sheet
  2. Reach out to your school counselor at the start of the year (Aug) and inform them about your desire to start the club
  3. Reach out to a teacher advisor who will help facilitate the club setup and oversee its functioning. Most schools require a minimum number of kids before they allow you to open the chapter, so recruit kids
  4. You will be sharing a life skill that every individual should have, so don’t limit your pitch to kids interested in finance
  5. Follow the school club opening requirement and open your chapter
  6. Once set up, please email/call me, and I’ll give you access to all the club resources
  7. Remember, we want to create a huge impact. Make the club fun, knowledgeable, and continue to recruit more members!
